In the film's ensemble voice cast, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Estelle Harris, Jeff Pidgeon, Jodi Benson, John Morris, Laurie Metcalf and R. Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the other toys are accidentally donated to a daycare center by Andy's mother, and the toys must decide where their loyalties lie. In the film, Andy Davis, now 17, is leaving for college. It was directed by Lee Unkrich, the editor of the first two films and the co-director of Toy Story 2, written by Michael Arndt, while Unkrich wrote the story along with John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton, respectively, director and co-writer of the first two films.

In 1983, Steven SpielbergвЂ™s вЂњE.T.вЂќ - for my money, the greatest childrenвЂ™s movie made - was beaten out for best picture by Richard AttenboroughвЂ™s starched, proper and mostly interminable biopic вЂњGandhi.Toy Story 3 is a 2010 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. In 1940, вЂњThe Wizard of OzвЂќ won only two Oscars, for best song and best score. Part of whatвЂ™s going on here, of course, can be chalked up to a wrongheaded bias among so many adults who think works that traffic in simple language and accessible themes canвЂ™t possibly be вЂњseriousвЂќ or вЂњimportant.вЂќAcademy voters are egregiously guilty of this shortsightedness. And more than any of the other nine films nominated for best picture, it pushes the art form into a brave new direction. But вЂњToy StoryвЂќ covers many of these same themes, with wit and economy and charm. вЂњThe Social NetworkвЂќ tells a story of megalomania and greed in the pursuit of a new American business ideal - the latest in a long line of titles that includes вЂњCitizen Kane,вЂќ вЂњGiantвЂќ and вЂњThere Will Be Blood.вЂќ вЂњThe KingвЂ™s SpeechвЂќ capitalizes on our collective yearning for steady moral leadership in uncertain times, and the age-old pleasure of watching an unlikely hero triumph over insurmountable odds.Д«oth have much to say about the nature of friendship and loyalty, and what it means to be honorable when youвЂ™re surrounded by scoundrels.

None of this is to diminish the achievements of David FincherвЂ™s вЂњThe Social NetworkвЂќ and Tom HooperвЂ™s вЂњThe KingвЂ™s Speech.вЂќ But they are familiar movies, and fundamentally safe ones.

If this is not the year to honor the Pixar Animation Studio, which has pulled off this astonishing hat trick before, with вЂњUp,вЂќ вЂњWALL-E,вЂќ вЂњRatatouille,вЂќ вЂњThe IncrediblesвЂќ and вЂњFinding Nemo,вЂќ then when? How many best animated film Oscars can Pixar win before the Academy stops ghettoizing its truly universal, for-all-ages achievements? The arguments against Woody, Buzz and company - that вЂњToy Story 3вЂќ is just a kidвЂ™s movie that itвЂ™s conjured up entirely inside of a computer - simply no longer hold water. Meanwhile, this yearвЂ™s Oscar race has come down to two titles - вЂњThe Social NetworkвЂќ and вЂњThe KingвЂ™s SpeechвЂќ - that hardly approach the depth of feeling, the complexity of themes and the sheer entertainment value of вЂњToy Story 3.вЂќ Yet much like 2009вЂ™s equally heartbreaking вЂњUp,вЂќ also by the animation studio Pixar, the film is almost certain to lose the top prize and instead be handed a consolation award, the best animated film Oscar. Based on the nose blowing around me, IвЂ™m pretty sure I wasnвЂ™t the only one having such an overwhelming reaction to the movie.Д®ight months later, вЂњToy Story 3вЂќ is deservedly in the mix for the best picture Oscar. Perhaps I was just being nostalgic for the toys of my own youth - and all of the innocence and hopefulness they symbolize. Perhaps it was because I had made my own journey with the toys of вЂњToy Story,вЂќ from youth into adulthood (the first film opened in 1995), and I wasnвЂ™t quite ready to bid them farewell.

The rest of the toys will have to spend the rest of their days in a dark, musty attic.ДЄs these tender, patient final scenes played out, and Andy found a way to give his toys a new life, my tears turned into quietly heaving sobs. They make their way home, only to end up back at square one: Their beloved friend Andy is leaving for college and only plans to take Woody with him. I STARTED CRYING about 10 minutes before the end of вЂњToy Story 3,вЂќ and the tears did not relent until well after the closing credits had finished rolling.Д«uzz Lightyear, Woody and Jesse had escaped the clutches of Lotso, вЂњan evil bear who smells of strawberries,вЂќ the head of a band of abandoned toys at a day care center.
